Megan’s original blue butterfly tusche wash painting artwork, Mariposa, reflects the butterfly’s fluttering flight within the fluid motion of the wet pigment application.

One of my favorite pieces to paint because I feel like I had played around long enough with this media to begin to have a good comprehension of it. I had worked with the toner in a dry application to create my first butterfly images, but now wanted to try something different.

I started mixing my toner with water to create a tusche wash of unpredictable lines, shapes and compositions. I started painting the butterfly’s head and body, and loved how the watery tusche dried*. Then I painted the butterfly’s wings. I loved the first wing that I painted, but the second wing needed more manipulation to achieve an even balance, it was not so easy.

This media allows me to manipulate an area over and over again, but I need to be careful that the reworked marks are not too obvious. I find it more satisfying to be able to apply my wash on the surface and have a successful appearance the first time, but that is not always possible.
