“Arpillera Roja” (Red Burlap) is a monoprint made with Akua Inks. I have rekindled printmaking and fiber art into my portfolio for the last few years. Knitting and working with fibers reduces my anxiety through its repetitive motions, tactile engagement, and focus on patterns, which promote mindfulness and relaxation for me. The combination of counting and textures grounds my mind in the present, providing comfort and distraction from stress. Patterns also offer me a sense of structure and predictability, which can be reassuring in times of uncertainty. That’s why I print with burlap…the patterns show where everything is going well, fitted, together, and where things fall apart.
