Walt Whitman’s poem “I Sing the Body Electric” celebrates the human body and spirit, challenging the societal norms and conventional views of his time. His poem exalts the physical body, presenting it as sacred and equal in all individuals, regardless of race, gender, or social status—a radical idea in the mid-19th century.
Inspired by Whitman’s words, particularly the lines, “Within there runs blood, the same old blood! the same red-running blood! There swells and jets a heart, there all passions, desires, reachings, aspirations,” I created the sculpture La Sangre se Hincha/The Blood Flows.
Using repurposed materials—burlap and upcycled paint—I aimed to convey the belief that all bodies, regardless of status, are worthy of celebration. This artwork, made from humble, reclaimed materials, emphasizes the inherent value and dignity of all human forms.
By repurposing materials like burlap and leftover latex paint, I strive to make a positive impact on the environment. Although the amount I use is small, each drop of paint that I save from ending up in a landfill contributes to a healthier planet.
