OVERLOOK
July 1 – August 31, 2026
Portal Gallery, ReCreative Denver
OVERLOOK is an exhibition that traces my twenty-year relationship with reclaimed burlap, a material that has become both the foundation and collaborator in my artistic practice. Through paintings, printmaking, and sculpture, the exhibition explores observation, transformation, and the hidden histories carried within discarded materials.
Inspired in part by a chance encounter with a wild mustang standing alone on a New Mexico road, OVERLOOK reflects on what it means to truly notice something that has always been there. Like the horse, burlap carries its own history—stains, repairs, wear, and evidence of a previous life. Rather than conceal these marks, I preserve them, allowing the material to retain its identity while becoming something new.
A central feature of the exhibition is the creation of a new sculptural work, also titled OVERLOOK. Throughout the two-month exhibition, visitors will be able to view concept sketches, mockups, materials, and the artwork itself as it develops in the gallery. Constructed from reclaimed burlap and repurposed paint collected from recent public mural projects, the sculpture is inspired by the form and spirit of the wild mustang that sparked the exhibition.
By sharing both finished artworks and works in progress, OVERLOOK invites visitors into the creative process itself. The exhibition asks us to slow down, pay attention, and reconsider the value of materials, experiences, and stories that are often weathered, discarded, or overlooked.
